More Sale Analysis

Uncategorized on January 30th, 2010 2 Comments

A few people have been asking me for more stats on the Qwak sale, and I also wanted to waffle on a bit about the experience. Okay, so I didn’t actually do much promotion for this at all, I made a post on the indiegamer.com forums, the TIGsource forums, and perhaps one or two other smaller forums, then I sent out a newsletter to all the subscribers on the Qwak mailing list (which isn’t that big), and that was about it. Post Sale Analysis

Here’s my Google Analytics showing traffic before, and then during the 7 day sale period. As you can see, before the sale, I was averaging 50-70 visits per day; during the sale that shot up to almost 2,000 on a couple of days.

Evangelizing Yourself

EvangelizingI came across this most inspiring presentation the other day; it’s by Whitney Hess, and I think her message is one that’s certainly applicable to the indie game developer; especially if you’re a big old scardy cat like me!

So she talks about using your blog and social networking, to create an out-flow of information, relating to your area of expertise, and much more…

Qwak – PC

Featured, Portfolio on January 14th, 2010 No Comments

Qwak for PC, is my first published game for the PC (and now it’s on Mac too). I did pretty much everything myself (design, coding, graphics, level design, tool development etc).

Qwak has it’s own website here. Where you can download a demo of the game to play on your PC or Mac (and hopefully go on to buy the full game!).

It’s not an easy game, but I don’t think it’s too hard either. A lot of people have said very good things about it, and there’s a nice balance of action and puzzle solving. Great fun, go check it out now!

All Terrain Racing

box_256All Terrain Racing (affectionately known as ATR), actually started life as a top-down racer; and was to be the spiritual successor to Nitro.

I began development on the game, after finishing off Qwak, and signed up again with Team17, who already magically had the graphics (by Danny Burke of Body Blows fame) for an isometric perspective racer. The result of this mish-mash … ATR!

Very much a love it or hate it game, people either like it a lot, or hate it! It wasn’t an easy game by any stretch of the imagination, and I think it was better received by the hard-core gamer types. Still, it did receive a lot of very good reviews in the gaming press (despite the odd controversy).

Nitro

Featured, Portfolio on January 14th, 2010 2 Comments

box_256This was a really fun game to make. I started working on the Atari ST version of Nitro, and had an almost complete game, before signing with Psygnosis.

There were a few differences between the Amiga and the ST versions of this game, perhaps the most notable being that the ST version only scrolled vertically, while the Amiga version had full 8-way scrolling.

The game was well received by the gaming press, and well regarded for it’s playability. Considered a classic by many!

Qwak – Amiga

box_256If ever there was one, this little game was a complete labor of love. I developed Qwak to what I felt was a near complete state, before signing with Team17.

Team17 were an absolute joy to work with; everyone in the office chipped in suggestions and ideas and there was a great buzz and energy about the game.

It was very well received by the gaming press of the day, and well thought of by it’s many fans, with it’s frantic fast-paced game-play constantly keeping you on your toes!
